With the release of Counter-Strike 2, one handy feature from CS:GO has carried over: Storage Units. These in-game containers let players organize and expand their inventory space well beyond the standard limit. Here’s a complete breakdown of how they work, what they’re for, and how to use them effectively.
What Is a Storage Unit?
A Storage Unit is a basic-grade in-game item that allows you to store up to 1,000 additional items in Counter-Strike 2. Think of it as a private container where you can temporarily set aside items you’re not actively using — perfect for decluttering your main inventory.
In theory, a player can hold up to 999,001 items using 999 fully-loaded Storage Units.
How to Get a Storage Unit
You can buy a Storage Unit directly from the in-game store for:
- $1.99 USD
- €1.75
- £1.69
Once purchased, the unit needs to be activated: right-click it and select “Start Using This Unit” to give it a name and start storing items.
Good to know: You can rename your Storage Unit anytime, as many times as you want — no Name Tag required.

Who Should Use Storage Units?
Storage Units are useful for all players, even if you haven’t hit the 1,000-item inventory cap. They’re especially helpful for:
- Collectors of rare or investment-grade skins
- Traders and resellers who want to sort items (e.g. knives, skins, graffiti, etc.)
- Organized players who prefer to group items by type, usage, or value
How to Store and Retrieve Items
There are two ways to deposit items:
- From your inventory: Right-click on any item > “Move to Storage Unit”
- From the unit itself: Click on the unit > “Deposit Items” > select the items to move
To retrieve skins from a unit:
- Click the unit > “Retrieve Items” or “Inspect” to browse the contents, then hit RETRIEVE
⚠️ Note: Default weapons, agents, gloves, music kits, medals, Pick’Em trophies, and other storage units cannot be placed in a Storage Unit.
Where Do Items Go After Retrieval?
When you take an item out of a Storage Unit, it goes right back to its original spot in your inventory — it doesn’t jump to the top. If you can’t find it immediately, just use the inventory search bar.
Restrictions & Limitations
While an item is stored inside a unit, you can’t:
- Equip it
- Trade it
- Sell it on the Steam Market
- Rename or modify it in any way
Also, Storage Units themselves and their contents cannot be traded or sold. Once purchased, a unit is permanently tied to your account.
Interface & Updates
Since their initial launch on November 22, 2019, Storage Units have received several quality-of-life updates:
- Nov 26, 2019: Bulk item selection added for deposits
- Oct 26, 2022: Improved interface + ability to delete empty units (no refund)
Best Practices for Organization
Players commonly use Storage Units to:
- Hide clutter like sealed graffiti
- Isolate investment items (cases, rare skins, etc.)
- Prevent trade offers on sensitive items (like knives)
- Sort skins by theme (e.g. by weapon, color, team, etc.)
Summary
At under $2, Storage Units offer a powerful tool for organizing your Counter-Strike 2 inventory. Whether you’re a serious trader, long-term collector, or just someone who likes a tidy inventory, these containers are a must-have addition.
